Y4 Computing

Today, Year 4 were on Lesson 2 of their 'Programming' learning sequence in Computing. They are learning to create a program in a text-based language.

At the start of the lesson, the children discussed their prior learning of Logo from last week. The children, 'D' in particular, were able to feedback good knowledge to the class about what programming instructions they used and about the turtle.

A Daily Review was then used as a method of retrieval, linking back to learning that had happened last week.

The lesson then moved on to a debugging task where the children had to look at a piece of computer coding and identify what was was wrong with the code: the children were good at identifying the close details of why a code would not run properly, for example, not having a space in between RT and 90.

The main activity was all about programming a turtle to draw a capital letter, which was modeled by the teacher as worked example. The children were able to use this example to apply the correct coding language to their own example.

'T' was able to reflect on what he had learnt before: "I know my degrees from Maths, which helps me turn the turtle correctly. Last week we were learning FD 100 and CS, which means Clear Screen."

'D' was able to explain that she had been taught the basics of the programming language in a previous lesson which helped her move the turtle, "In Year 3, we used Scratch."

'E' explained that they are learning how to draw letters on Logo, "An algorithm is a set of instructions for the computer. We started this last week. We learnt some coding skills in Year 2 and Year 3 - I can remember the word algorithm from that."
