Case Study: Year 4

Aspiration: People who have achieved great things from small or difficult beginnings
History: The First Railways with a focus on Sheringham

As an introduction lesson to their History unit: ‘The First Railways with a focus on Sheringham’, Year 4 took an
objective from the Aspiration progression, learning
That some people have achieved great things from small of difficult beginnings.

The focus of the lesson was the life of George Stephenson, who went on to contribute great things to
the development of the railways, after a difficult
Childhood where he did not learn to read or write.

The Year 4 team used this as an opportunity for the children to learn about the importance of having high aspirations.

While exploring aspirations, the children also explored potential barriers that we may come across in achieving our aspirations.

During the lesson, the children continued to develop their History skills by writing comparative statements, reflecting on their lives at ten years old compared to the life of George Stephenson.

The children were provided with an opening prompt to begin their writing and were then given key comparative words to apply to the rest of the paragraph: whereas, but, however, in contrast.

Although the children were not enable to engage in the ‘Meet in the Middle’ activity that was planned, collaborative discussion still enabled the children to explore and develop their ideas before sharing with the class.

Alongside George Stephenson, when reflecting on the barriers that people overcome, the children explored other famous people who have achieved great things from difficult beginnings like Rosa Parks.
