Case Study: Year 3

Resilience: Building Resilience & Teamwork

History: The Ancient Egyptians

Using objectives from the resilience thread of our CARES progression, the Year 3 team planned an independent research project for their children.

The main focus of this particular unit of work was for the children to lead their own learning in small teams, which provided the children to practise the planning, monitoring and evaluating skills set out in the resilience curriculum.

There was also a strong emotional element to this learning, where the children learnt to face challenges in a positive way. By working in teams, they were encouraged to show respect for each others’ views, which is one of our British Values objectives.

At the end of the unit, which was spread over 4 afternoons, the children presented their learning to the rest of the class, which is an activity from the Year 3 ‘Wish List’.

The first lesson in the unit was all about planning, where the children learnt the skills of planning a task and were able to talk about this with each other.

The children were given the challenge of planning an informative fact file about Ancient Egypt, with the end goal of presenting this to a live audience – their class – at the end of the project.

In groups of 4, the children made decisions about how to approach the task as a team and set themselves goals for completing the challenge.

The children then went on, in subsequent sessions, to creating their fact files. They were encouraged to monitor and adapt their approach to the task, making decisions about which member of the group was responsible for which task: for example, some children were responsible for accessing information on a tablet, while other children were responsible for recording the information.

Towards the end of the project, the children were encouraged to reflect upon their task and evaluate how successful their teamwork and overall outcome was. They were taught how to give and receive positive and constructive feedback to each other, which addressed the emotional objective of showing
Respect for the views of others.

To finish the unit of work, Year 3 held a celebration afternoon where the children practised presenting their work and then went on to share each others presentations and achievements, which the children enjoyed immensely.

At the end of their presentations, the audience were encouraged to ask questions that encouraged them to reflect on the success of their work.
