Case Study: Year 2

Resilience: How resilient is my bean?
Science: Plants

Year 2 launched CARES for the first time via their Science unit: Plants.

This involved growing a bean from a seed. Year 2 were able to incorporate something from the whole-school ‘Wish List’ enabling children to have the experience of growing something to eat.

Subject specific knowledge, skills and vocabulary were taken straight from the Science progression grid.

By looking at planning, the Year 2 team show clear strategies for learning key knowledge, by deploying the school’s collaborative learning techniques. In the first session, C1P (Catch-1-Partner) was used to recall names of common plants and trees.

This learning was extended in the next session, when the children were taught key knowledge about deciduous and evergreen trees and applying that knowledge to identifying trees that were seen in the previous session

During a learning walk that focused on the implementation of the CARES elements of the curriculum, reference to these elements was seen being explicitly taught with links between resilience and the resilience of the bean seed being highlighted to the children.

The children had watched the CARES mini-launch video on the previous day.

Whilst learning knowledge of plants, including: deciduous and evergreen trees and the key parts of a plant (root, leaves, stem etc.) the children also developed their skills by working scientifically. By closely observing their beans grow they were able to make observations and record data.
